Detached Traditional Byre, located in rural Stirlingshire on a large plot with views overlooking Ben Lomond. The single storey byre structure had previously been extended to the east, creating a drawing room and our clients sough to add a further gable extension to create additional bedroom accommodation and to better exploit the stunning views.
The existing single storey Byre is a traditional longhouse form, and had previous additions of a conservatory and gable extension to the east. Our clients sought to remove the west wing bedroom accommodation and form a higher gable form to create a one and half storey extension to better exploit the views. Whilst this involved raising the ridge height above the original byre form, planners recognised that the extension remained subservient sitting behind the original form. Materials were selected to match the original byre, to create a welcome addition, and the stone was reclaimed from the downtakings and re-used on the extension.
Traditional timber sash and case windows were chosen to replicate the original Byre, supplied and installed by Blairs Windows, with a feature gable window to allow natural light into the master suite which enjoys private views to the Campsie Fells and beyond. Large Proprietary Rooflights by the Rooflight Company were inserted into the roofscape opening up to allow and indoor / outdoor experience, again to soak up the rural country views.
The existing garage had served it’s useful life and was taken down and re-build and clad in Larch Cladding to replicate the timber detailing on the gable of the byre. The triple bay garage, allowing a work from home study, separated from the house.
